About
Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, Kateryna graduated in 2012 from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with a Master’s degree and went on to work in theatres such as Deutsche Oper Berlin, Theater an der Wien, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam and Schauspielhaus Zürich. She was assistant to such directors as Christof Loy, Alvis Hermanis, René Pollesch, Stefan Pucher, Hans Neuenfels, Damiano Micheletto and Stefan Herheim. In 2014 she staged A Hero Of Our Time, after a novel by Michal Lermontov — her first work at the Schauspielhaus Zürich. In 2016 and 2017 she staged Verdi’s Macbeth and Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail at the Staatstheater Oldenburg.
2019 brought stagings of Le Nozze di Figaro at the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, as well as Hindemith’s Sancta Susanna at the Konzerthaus Wien and Baltimore under the musical direction of Marin Alsop. A staging of Le Nozze di Figaro at Theater an der Wien followed in 2021. Kateryna’s most recent projects include The Cunning Little Vixen at Theater Freiburg, a staging of Cantates Françaises at Prangins Baroque, and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Vienna.
From 2019 to 2022, she taught at the Institute for Voice and Musical Theatre of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Kateryna Sokolova is a member of the European Academy of Music Theatre.
